The name “Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center” was adopted as the center’s business name and a Trademark was registered in the US and Rwanda in July 2017.

2017

The center assumed full management of all its facilities and strengthened its role in the community through partnership building, working with local cooperatives and organizations to expand women’s access to markets and resources. It also grew into a tourism and cultural hub, attracting both Rwandan and international visitors with authentic crafts, cultural experiences, and sustainable development in action. The center became a home for women-led businesses started by WfWI graduates, including tailoring, crafts, dairy, and hospitality. Today, it stands as a vibrant space for learning, creativity, commerce, and community partnership, uplifting women across the Kayonza community.

Our History

Established in 2013 by Women for Women International (WfWI) in Kayonza District, Urugo began as a center dedicated to advancing women’s economic development through vocational and life skills training. Officially registered with the Rwanda Development Board in 2016 as a social enterprise, the center adopted the name Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center and registered its trademark in both Rwanda and the U.S. in 2017. Over the years, Urugo has grown into a hub for skills training, business incubation, and cultural tourism, collaborating with local cooperatives and organizations to connect women with markets and resources. Today, Urugo stands as a vibrant space for learning, creativity, and commerce, supporting women-led enterprises and contributing to the economic and social growth of the Kayonza community.
